Biography: Daniel A. Brown

Dan Brown is a composer/pianist/conductor/engineer, and all-around nice guy from Salt Lake City, currently studying a dual degree of Film Scoring and Music Composition, with a minor in Contemporary Conducting, funded by the Berklee North America Scholarship. Dan enjoys long walks by the river, reading novels by firelight, and writing biographies in the third person.

Dan has been in love with music since his first lesson at the age of ten, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His passion for music compelled him to join numerous musical organizations, and excel in competitions across the state while still in high school.

Dan Brown is a classically trained pianist and composer, but loves and performs all styles of music, emphasizing on pop, jazz, and musical theatre styles. He studied classically with Dr. Jie Lu at the University of Utah before studying jazz with Marc Rossi, Robert Christopherson, and Neil Olmstead at the Berklee College of Music.

Dan accompanies, records, and engineers for musicians all over the Boston area. He regularly plays for auditions, proficiencies, juries, and recitals at Berklee and the Boston Conservatory.

Trained by Jay Clark, the Senior Cultural Arts Producer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and the Salt Lake Community College Recording Arts program, Dan is also an accomplished sound engineer. He has run sound for the Grand Theatre in Salt Lake City, Roger’s Memorial Theatre in Bountiful, and Roxburry Repertory Theatre in Boston. He also creates minus tracks, and records/produces songs for musicians in the Boston area. Right now he is the audio specialist at the South End Technology Center, working as a recording engineer and digital technologies tutor and teacher.

Dan has performed with many performing groups and artists from the Salt Lake City area, including the Taylorsville Symphony, Granite Youth Symphony, South City Jazz Choir, Salt Lake Chamber Singers, Granger Alumni Madrigals, and the Lance-Grange Jazz trio. Around Boston, Dan performs his own music as a solo act, as well as with the Berklee Musical Theatre Orchestra, and the Boston Choir and Orchestra, which he conducts and arranges for.

Dan composes and arranges for the Harvard Underground A Cappella Choir and Granger High School choral program on a reglar basis, but has arranged and composed for performing groups around the country.

Dan is a talented Music Director and conductor, and has founded and directed several music groups. He has been the director of the bands Lyrical Pursuit, and The Heroics. He founded and conducted the Granger Alumni Madrigal Choir, and was a leader on the Taylorsville City Arts council as a representative of the Taylorsville Symphony. He has music directed on a regular basis for Granger High School, Granite School District, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Granger Stake. Dan is a regular music director at the Boston Conservatory, and will be returning to music direct his third touring production with the Theatre Offensive this May. Dan will be co-music directing his first show at Berklee this March, Curtain Up.

Dan has received the “Sterling Scholar of Music” award from Granger High School, and “Best Pit Orchestra of 2008”, “Best Pit Orchestra of 2010”, and “Best Musical of 2010” from the Granite District Drama Awards, all for musicals he music directed and/or conducted. Dan has been one of the winners of the "Curtain Up" songwriting competition at the Berklee College of Music for both 2011 and 2012.
